The selection covers themes ranging from the life experience of different female characters to the impact of violence on society or the search for one’s identity

09/17/2019.- The experiences lived by some women in different places and periods of time, the biographies of lost talents, the effects of unbridled capitalism, films as a historic document, geographic and generational distance, the consequences of violence or the search of one’s identity are some of the themes covered in the 16 documentaries that make up the Time of History section of the 64th Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid, where they will compete for the first and second prizes in the section, with a prize money of 20.000 and 10.000 euros respectively. This section will show works from countries such as Iran, Syria, United Kingdom, Brazil, Poland, Ireland, France, Sweden, Cambodia, Argentina or the United States, as well as two from Spain or with Spanish co-production.

Delband (Beloved), by Yaser Talebi (Iran); Silvia, by Maria Silvia Esteve (Argentina); The Magic Life Of V, by Tonislav Hristov (Finland / Denmark / Bulgaria), and Shooting The Mafia, by Kim Longinotto (Ireland / United States) have women as protagonists. The latter is also the biography of Sicilian photographer Letizia Battaglia. The films The Changin’ Times Of Ike White, by Dan Vernon (United Kingdom), and The Journey of Javier Heraud, by Javier Corcuera (Peru / Spain) are also about people from the world of culture. Estou Saving Me For When O Carnival Chegar (Waiting For The Carnival), by Marcelo Gomes (Brazil) addresses the consequences of capitalism in small communities, and In Touch, by Pawel Ziemilski (Poland / Iceland), reflects on how to keep in touch with family despite the geographical distance.

Violence and its effects are the theme of the documentaries Lagun y la resistencia frente a ETA, by Belén Verdugo Orecife (Spain) and The Cave, by Feras Fayyad (Syria / Denmark / Germany / United States / Qatar), which highlights the fight for survival in an underground hospital built in Damascus. Kabul City In The Wind, by Aboozar Amini (Netherlands / Afghanistan / Japan / Germany focuses on the experiences of children and adolescents, as does Transnistra, by Anna Eborn (Sweden / Denmark / Belgium).

Cinema itself, the image and its significance is the theme of Nhà Cây (The Tree House), by Trương Minh Quý (Singapore / Vietnam / Germany / France / China) and Talking About Trees, by Suhaib Gasmelbari (France / Sudan / Germany / Qatar / Chad).

The competition also includes the films Heimat Ist Ein Raum Aus Zeit (Heimat Is a Space In Time), by Thomas Heise (Germany / Austria) and Yub Menh Bong Keunh Oun Nho Nhim (Last Night I Saw You Smiling), by Kavich Neang ( Cambodia / France), on the destruction of an emblematic building in the capital of Cambodia.

The Time of History section will also include nine short films in competition: Akaboum (Manon Vila, France), All On A Mardi Gras Day (Michal Pietrzyk, United States), Bab Sebta (Ceuta’s Gate) (Randa Maroufi, France / Morocco), Los espacios confinados (Razzak Ukrainitz, Spain / France / Israel), Frisson d’amour (Maxence Stamatiadis, France), El infierno (Raúl de la Fuente Calle, Spain), Love 404 (Agata Baumgart, Poland), Misericórdia (Xavier Marrades, Spain / Brazil) and Scenes From a Dry City (François Verster and Simon Wood, South Africa / United States).
