The late 1960s. Nana cannot escape her past. Poverty-stricken, having lost her family to the war in West Java, she marries again and begins a new life. But the past lives on in her dreams. Her new husband is wealthy, but her place in the home is menial, and he is unfaithful. Nana suffers in silence until the day she meets one of her husband’s mistresses, and everything changes. Ino is someone she can trust, someone who offers her comfort and to whom she can confide her secrets, past and present.
Born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1986, she studied sociology and media arts at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. Her directing debut ‘The Mirror Never Lies’, screened in the 2012 Berlinale Generation. Her second feature film ‘The Seen and Unseen’ won the Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury in 2018 while her third, the teen drama ‘Yuni’, won the Platform Prize at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. She has also directed a number of short films like ‘Following Diana’ (2015), ‘Memoria’ (2016), ‘Sekar’ (2019) and ‘Back Home’ (2019). ‘Before, Now & Then’, his fourth feature film, won the award for Best Supporting Performance for Laura Basuki in Berlin and won the Jury Prize at the Brussels Festival.
