Western Ukraine, on the eve of a traditional carnival. Pamfir returns to his family after months of absence. Their love is so unconditional that when his only child starts a fire in the prayer house, Pamfir has no other choice but to reconnect with his troubled past to repair his son’s fault. He will be taken on a risky path with irreversible consequences.
He was born in 1983, in Uman, Ukraine. Before filmmaking, he graduated from the Architecture faculty of Chernivtsi Technical College, and the Philosophy faculty of Chernivtsy National University (Bachelor degree). In 2013, he graduated from Kyiv National Karpenko-Karyy University of Theatre, Cinema and Television. While in film school, he made several short films that received awards at different international film festivals. His Bachelor thesis film, ‘The Beard’, was part of the short films almanac ‘Ukraine, Goodbye!’, and was included in the ‘Ukrainian New Wave’ best short films of Ukraine collection in 2012. A participant at the Berlinale Talents and the Locarno Film Academy, he is the founder of the script platform Terrarium. His short film ‘Weighlifter’ (2018) competed for the European Film Awards and was awarded in Angers. ‘Pamfir’ (2022), his first feature film, premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Festival.
