To dissect the political and cultural moment lived in the United States between 2016 and 2020, sisters Dan and Dominique Angeloro (who adopt the nickname of Soda Jerk as directors) have mixed music and foreign images that they assemble at will to build on that basis a film in the style of a Broadway musical, but with a clearly political and critical content.
This Wednesday, the sisters presented their unique proposal Hello Dankness in the Meeting Point section as a reaction to the motley news they had for breakfast every morning at that time. “We write the story, edit, re-edit and make the script,” they explained about their particular working method outside conventional cinema.
Contrary to what one might think, its creation from ‘stolen’ material has not provoked adverse reactions from the authors of the original. Although at the beginning they did perceive some reticence (“what have they done with our film?”), in the end they have been full of praise.
For the moment, they have no plans to make a conventional film: “The way we work is by stealing, in quotation marks, to make a political film”. With Hello Dankness, which plays with a possible confusion with ‘darkness’, to introduce the nuance of humidity, they had simply set out to make a film for the Internet, although it has passed through the Berlinale and is being well received on the festival circuit.
