  • The director x-rays his generation by looking at a decade in the life of a couple, played by Iria del Río and Francesco Carril.
  • SEMINCI bets again on series created by major filmmakers, as it did in the past, with works by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, David Lynch and Lars von Trier, among others.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The New Years will have its Spanish premiere at the 69th SEMINCI, following the success of its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. The original Movistar Plus+ production, in collaboration with Caballo Films and in association with ARTE France, is divided into two blocks, which will be screened in their entirety at the 69th Valladolid International Film Week. The first part will be screened on the 18th of October, the opening day of the event, and the second part on the 19th of October.

The New Years depicts the life journey of a couple over the course of a decade, narrated in 10 episodes that revolve around the same moment: the turn of the year. The show was created by Sara Cano, Paula Fabra and Sorogoyen himself, who directs four of the ten episodes starring Iria del Río and Francesco Carril. Along with Sorogoyen, Sandra Romero (Por donde pasa el silencio) and David Martín de los Santos (That Was Life) are directing. Marina Rodríguez Colás and Antonio Rojano also participated in writing the screenplay. The filming of the series took place in various locations in the Madrid region, Castilla-La Mancha, Lyon and Berlin.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen is one of the most acclaimed directors of his generation. His latest film, The Beasts, received nine Goya awards (including Best Film, Direction and Original Screenplay) and the French César Award for Best Foreign Film. He has also won the Goya for Best Director and Best Screenplay for The Realm, and the Jury Award for Best Screenplay at the San Sebastian Film Festival for May God Save Us, among other awards.

Synopsis

The New Years unfold over the course of a decade, from New Year’s Eve 2014 to the 31st of December 2024. Ana turns 30 on New Year’s Eve with her life still unresolved: she lives in a shared flat, she doesn’t like her job, she often changes friends… Oscar turns 30 on New Year’s Eve with his life almost sorted out: vocational doctor, loyal friends, and a relationship that comes and goes. The night they both turn 30, they meet, fall in love, and begin a relationship that will last for ten years.

Series by leading filmmakers

By screening Sorogoyen’s new project in its entirety, prior to its premiere on Movistar Plus+, SEMINCI is bringing back to the programme serial productions conceived as a cinematic work and signed by great filmmakers. The Valladolid International Film Festival has hosted Rainer Werner Fassbinder‘s Berlin Alexanderplatz (1985), Edgar Reitz‘s Heimat (1984), the first two seasons of Lars von Trier‘s The Kingdom (1995 and 1997) and David Lynch‘s Twin Peaks (1990), including the screening of the pilot episode, among other titles. This was also the aim of The Series of the Year, a pioneering section that SEMINCI programmed between 1984 and 1994 in collaboration with the Spanish Television (Televisión Española).
