Who Cares? approaches the technique of medical simulation, whereby a healthcare environment is recreated in the form of a forum theatre. Health professionals interact with actors playing the role of patients to practice and develop the care tools necessary in their profession. With the conviction that empathy is not innate, but is rather an acquired skill, Alexe Poukine, director of the multi-award-winning What Which Does Not Kill (2019), takes her camera into a training centre in Lausanne. There, she captures the inner struggles of the caregivers, whose prejudices and worldviews are reflected in their daily practice. But far from judging them, Who Cares? exposes the working conditions that keep medical staff in circumstances of constant pressure. And, instead of blaming individuals, it denounces the dynamics of a system that challenges them not to lose their sense of humanity.

Alexe Poukine

Filmmaker and screenwriter born in 1982 in Belgium. After studying drama and photography, she pursued anthropology, documentary filmmaking, and screenwriting. Her graduation film, ‘Petites morts’ (2008), was selected in several international festivals. Following two feature-length documentaries, ‘Dormir, dormir dans les pierres’ (2013)and ‘Sans frapper’ (2019, Jury Prize for Most Innovative Feature Film in the International Competition at the Visions du Réel festival), she directed her first fiction film, ‘Palma’ in 2020. She is currently focused on filming her first feature-length fiction, scheduled for this year.
