The spanish cinema section features two of the latest movies by the malaga-born actress: ‘Litus’ by Dani de la Orden, and Tudor Giurgiu’s ‘Parking’
15/10/2019.- Spanish actress Belén Cuesta will act as special host or “Godmother” for the 64th edition of Seminci and will therefore read the festival director’s letter during the Opening Gala on October 19. This is the first time Cuesta joins the Valladolid Festival, where she also appears in two titles selected for participation in the section Spanish Cinema: Dani de la Orden’s Litus, and Tudor Giurgiu’s Parking.
Belén Cuesta studied acting at Málaga’s High School of Drama. After moving to Madrid, she began her professional career in 2008 with a part in the series Cazadores de hombres. Later, she acted in other series like Palomitas or Bandolera.
Her performance as the nun Milagros in Holy Camp!, a film written and directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, was a turning point in her career. Next came her first leading roles for the silver screen in films like Eight Catalonian Surnames, directed by Emilio Martínez Lázaro, We need to talk, by David Serrano and El pregón (Party Town), by Dani de la Orden. Her acting job in Paco León’s Kiki, Love to Love, earned her a Goya nomination for Best New Actress.
Her role as Magüi in Paquita Salas, the Ondas-winning series by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, won the Feroz Prize for Best Supporting Actress. Following the show’s success, she played in the film adaptation of Holy Camp!, a performance for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the Goya Awards as well as for a Feroz Award.
In 2018 she returned to the stage to star in the Teatro Español’s production of Rabbit Hole, directed by David Serrano. She then joined the cast of Berto Romero’s series Mira lo que has hecho, and played several parts in films like Dani de la Orden’s Litus, Gabriela Tagliavini’s Despite Everything (a Bamboo/Netflix production), Tudor Giurgiu’s Parking , and Aritz Moreno’s Advantages of Traveling by Train.
After this year’s shot of The Knot (Hasta que la boda nos separe), also directed by Dani de la Orden, and the release of the third season of Paquita Salas, last summer she played for the first time at the Merida Classical Theatre Festival in Mary Zimmerman’s version of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. More recently, the San Sebastian Festival premiered The Endless Trench, a film by Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga where the Malaga-born actress plays Rosa, a woman who hides her husband for 33 years to spare him Franco’s repression.
