With the opening gala of a festival, the complicated, intense, quiet and, at the same time, passionate work of a team that prepares for 12 months what we are going to serve on the table of film lovers to be tasted for 8 days with pleasure and even gluttony comes to an end. A stable team that first imagines, then designs and fills with content for months a programme (which starts today and ends next Saturday) that floods the city of Valladolid with film content every day, from 8.30 in the morning until midnight for 8 days. An extensive and varied menu, made up of 150 films, including feature films and shorts, capable of satisfying all appetites (from the cinephile to the occasional consumer) with films from the five continents of the world, covering all genres and formats.
A veritable banquet of cinema, served on 10 cinema screens with a menu cooked, in equal parts, between established directors and those making their debut at our festival. From the former, we are looking for a certain type of cinema, a certain style, a certain flavour. From the latter, the debutants, we expect surprises. And this has always been the case. For more than half a century, SEMINCI has wanted to be a showcase for the best films by great directors and a springboard for new ones. And they all have something in common: they all make auteur cinema; a type of cinema that we claim as an alternative to the strictly commercial and merely entertaining cinema that usually fills the cinemas.
Therein lies our personality and specificity as a festival. We demand a cinema that is demanding in form and substance; films that are capable of activating our feelings and of keeping us in our seats with original, simple, shocking, unusual, moving and, why not, funny or comical stories. Films that flee from commonplaces, from pretentiousness, without traps and without shying away from risks. Films that will hopefully end up being popular and economically profitable in cinemas. Those of us who are preparing this selection of films for you at SEMINCI have the growing sensation of being seekers of appetizing morsels of a cinema that is as rare as it is exquisite.
I dare to define it as gourmet cinema. You have to come to a festival like ours to consume and taste it. Please, give yourselves a real binge of films, because this cinema is healthy, nourishing and does not repeat itself. Go and fill the cinemas, we need them!
Thank you for your support and let the feast begin!
