In these times when it seems that culture is no longer a necessary good and when its consumption is becoming more and more expensive by decree, we claim more than ever cinema as a useful and rich consumer product. Useful to provoke hope in human beings, to appeal to the most necessary feelings, such as generosity or solidarity. Rich to enliven our spirit and to scorn the prevailing resignation. We need films capable of telling us, in truth, about the reality that surrounds us, without syrup or euphemisms; films capable of suggesting other ways of living and of facing current conflicts, marked by economic and cultural imbalances, and by class and religious struggles. Films capable of amusing and entertaining us in times of darkness and despair.
And now, more than ever, we also want to vindicate film festivals as a meeting place for culture, for the exchange of ideas; as an ideal place for a different, special, independent, auteur cinema, which survives despite the strict rules of a commercialised market and almost monopolised by a dominant culture marked by the big studios. Because there is an audience for another kind of cinema, there are festivals like SEMINCI; an audience that does not need popcorn, cake, special effects or mere audiovisual spectacle to enjoy the cinema.
We demand, more than ever, official support so that festivals like ours, professional and not-for-profit, can survive and continue to be the last showcase for a diverse cinema, far from what is programmed on commercial circuits; a cinema that has almost completely disappeared from television channels and is alarmingly reducing its presence in cinemas. Festivals, like good cinema, are a rare commodity that the authorities and you, the film fans, should protect.
In eight days we are going to offer you around 160 films. In general they are a plea against the simple, the conventional, the obvious, the predictable or the commonplace. We have worked to bring you films that, for the most part and despite their merits, will not be seen in commercial circuits, unless they leave here blessed with an award or good reviews. We have worked to offer you a varied and emotionally rich menu, which we hope will leave a good taste on your palate and the best and most intense sensations for your senses.
Please eat cinema in cinemas. It is very nourishing and usually has no contraindications.
