In these days when the economic crisis, with the reduction of cinema attendance, aggravated by an abusive VAT of 21 percent, and the obligation to face the very expensive technological renovation, are leading to the systematic closure of cinemas, we vindicate, more than ever, the existence of independent and auteur cinema, the main sector affected by the situation. More than ever, we vindicate intimate cinema, cinema made with few means but with dignity, ambition and truth. Now that the presence of this type of cinema in cinemas is in danger, because they are closing or because businessmen prefer not to take risks with the box office, we demand a cinema that serves more than just to entertain.
For some time now, Spanish distributors have been complaining that they can't make ends meet when they import a European auteur film. In addition to the decline at the box office, independent and auteur films are practically disappearing from television channels (including public ones) in favour of the spectacle films of the big American studios. And if this type of cinema disappears from our screens, original version films will disappear in a few years' time, with an increasingly symbolic presence in today's cinemas. And the taste for a cinema capable of telling stories that appeal to our feelings, trigger our senses and help us to get to know human beings better will also disappear. And an important part of Spanish filmmakers will be seriously affected because they will have no screens to show their films, apart from the Internet.
For this reason, independent and auteur film lovers will need these unique showcases that festivals such as SEMINCI are becoming. As we were and still are the auteur film festival par excellence in Spain, we claim before you and the Spanish cultural authorities the sense of our existence and the importance of a closed and sincere support.
This year we want to give a special nod to children and young people, to whom we open the festival so that they can see premiere films, which have to do with awakening to life, affections and feelings. Films that help them to discover their own identity and to understand the world around them. And with this we intend to inoculate them with the virus of passion for another type of cinema, for the consumption of cinema in the cinema hall and in company. Returning to the concept of cinema as a social, cultural act and a free debate of ideas could be one of the keys to a more hopeful future for the cinema we love.
