Director, producer and writer born in Murcia in 1981. His work as a filmmaker has been screened at numerous international festivals and contemporary art centres. He has received the Underground Spirit Award for his entire career at the Paliç European Film Festival, and the Novos Cinemas festival in Pontevedra dedicated a spotlight to his work. Co-founder of the audiovisual collective Los Hijos, whose first feature film, ‘Los materiales’ (2010), won the Jean Vigo award for best direction at the Punto de Vista Festival and a special mention from the jury at FIDMarseille. ‘El futuro’, his first solo feature film, premiered at the Locarno Festival in 2013 and was awarded at Bafici, Lima Independiente, the IBAFF and the Uruguay Winter Festival. His last film as a director, ‘The Year of the Discovery’ (2020), premiered at the Rotterdam Festival and won various international and national awards, such as the Grand Jury Prize at the Seville European Film Festival, the Astor Piazzolla for best film at Mar del Plata, the Grand Prix for best film at Cinéma du Reél and two Goyas for best documentary film and best editing. He is co-author of the book ‘La aritmética de la creación’(2009), featuring interviews with producers in contemporary Spanish cinema, and in 2014 he published ‘Europa, narrativa breve enmarcada en la ciencia ficción’. In 2023 he won the 41st Herralde Novel Prize with ‘The White Desert’, published by Editorial Anagrama. He has taught at ECAM and ESCAC, and currently works as an assistant professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha. In 2023 he received a Fulbright predoctoral fellowship as a researcher in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Pennsylvania.
