Born in Fenyang, China in 1970 and graduated from the Beijing Film Academy. His first feature film, ‘Pickpocket’ (1997), won awards at Berlin, Vancouver and other festivals. Since then, his films have regularly premiered at major European festivals. In Venice, where he won the Golden Lion in 2006 for ‘Still Life’, he has competed with ‘Platform’ (2000), ‘The World’ (2004), Dong (2006) and ‘Useless’ (2007). He returned to Berlin in 2020 with his documentary ‘Swimming Out till the Sea Turns Blue’. And at Cannes, where he won the award for best screenplay in 2013 for ‘A Touch of Sin’, he was also selected for ‘Unknown Pleasures’ (2002), ’24 City’ (2008), ‘I Wish I Knew’ (2010), ‘Mountains May Depart’ (2015), ‘Ash is Purest White’ (2018) and ‘Caught by the Tides’ (2024).
