Ruth Beckermann, who for four decades has dealt with memory and political identity through documentaries, presented in the Encounters section of the Berlin Festival her approach to the Viennese working-class neighbourhood Favoriten, in which she has accompanied 25 children from a primary school for three years. This approach to the cultural dynamics of the new European generations focuses on the question of immigration and its implications for learning in the school environment. The camera lives in the classroom with the children, filming the cultural exchange and the remarkable identity and religious differences, witnessing their daily conversations, their activities and the problems arising from the scarcity of resources in the education system. The central figure of the film, the teacher Ilkay, constantly raises awareness on how an alternative pedagogy is possible, one that is capable of adapting to the globalised nature of contemporary Europe.
Ruth Beckermann

Filmmaker and author Ruth Beckermann is based in Vienna. Her films include ‘The Paper Bridge’, ‘East of War’ and ‘American Passages’. In 2014 her film ‘Those Who Go Those Who Stay’ received the big documentary film prize at the Diagonale in Graz. Two years later ‘The Dreamed Ones’ was also honoured there as best feature film. ‘The Waldheim Waltz’ received several awards, including the Glashütte Original – Documentary Award for best documentary film at the Berlinale 2018, as well as an Oscar nomination. In 2019, she created the installation ‘Joyful Joyce’ for the Salzburg Festival. Her film ‘Mutzenbacher’ (2022) was part of the Berlinale’s Encounters Competition, where it won the award for best film.
