 Austrian film historian Alexander Horwath makes his directorial debut with Henry Fonda For President, an ambitious essay with one of the great figures of classic Hollywood at its epicentre: Henry Fonda, not coincidentally the star of films like 12 Angry Men and Young Mr. Lincoln. Guided by the actor's voice (taken from his last interview in 1981), the film takes us on a journey through the political history of the United States through its cinematographic heritage. A geographical and temporal journey that takes us from one coast to another, from 1651 to 1976, all through the characters he brought to life. The archival footage contrasts with Horwath's present-day footage, pointing to the decline of the American dream and imagining the country that could have been: ‘Fonda's America’. Henry Fonda For President is the result of extensive research by Horwath and Regina Schlagnitweit. Editing, photography and sound were handled by Michael Palm (Edgar G. Ulmer - The Man Off-screen). 
Alexander Horwath

Born in 1964 in Vienna, he is a writer, curator and film historian. He was the director of the Viennale – Vienna International Film Festival (1992 – 97) and the Austrian Film Museum (2002 – 17). He curated the documenta 12 film program (2007) and many other projects in the film and art world. His essays and books have, among other topics, addressed subjects such as Josef von Sternberg, Ruth Beckermann, Guy Debord, Austrian avant-garde cinema, Film Curatorship, and the American cinema of the 1960s and 70s. He is a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and teaches Film History at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. ‘Henry Fonda for President’ (2024), his first film, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
