Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha, authors of Ballad of a White Cow (Best Direction at the 66th SEMINCI, have always been in the eye of the storm, denouncing the inequality of their native Iran. So much so that as a result of their latest film, the government has withdrawn their passports, forbidding them to leave the country. My Favourite Cake (Berlinale Fipresci Award) follows Mahin, a 70-year-old woman who has been living alone since her husband died and her daughter moved to Europe. From her independence, Mahin defies the expectations of her conservative environment. Even more so when she unexpectedly meets and begins a romantic relationship with a taxi driver named Faramarz. My Favourite Cake is a film about second chances, about the possibility of starting from scratch regardless of age or gender, against the dictates of tradition. A courageous ode to freedom that finds in personal stories the subtlest form of subversion.
