Glen Hansard is a singer-songwriter who plays on the streets of Dublin when he is not working in his father’s shop. During the day, to earn money, he performs well- known songs for passersby, but at night, he plays his own songs where he describes how his girlfriend left him. His talent attracts Markéta Irglová, a Czech immigrant who sells flowers on the street to support her daughter. She, too, is recovering from a love failure and, in order to overcome it, she writes songs about it, although she never performs them in public. Glen and Markéta unexpectedly end up doing a duet in a music store and this makes them discover that they have something in common. Not having recovered from their breakups, they are hesitant to struggle and start a relationship with each other. As they make a decision that may change their lives, they both focus on writing new songs and doing some recording so as to try to make their way into the music business.
