The Wailing is the debut feature film by Valladolid director Pedro Martín-Calero, which, following its screening in the Official Section of the San Sebastian Festival, will be screened in a special session at the 69th SEMINCI. Andrea, Camila and Marie are three women connected by an unknown threat. Without knowing it, all three are haunted, in different places and at different moments in time, by the same overwhelming sound: the wailing. Starring Ester Expósito (Elite, Veneno) and co-written with Goya winner Isabel Peña (The Beasts, Riot Police), The Wailing is a dramatic horror film that takes on the codes of the most psychological side of the genre. A personal exploration of human fears in which Martín-Calero debuts a powerful voice of his own. The cast is completed by Mathilde Ollivier (Mrs. Davies, 1899), Malena Villa (The Angel, Matadero), Álex Monner (Pulseras rojas), Sonia Almarcha (The Good Boss) and Tomás del Estal (Love in Difficult Times).
Pedro Martín Calero

Born in Valladolid in 1983, he studied photography at ECAM. He has directed music videos for bands such as Territoire and The Weeknd and award-winning commercials at Cannes Lions, the British Arrows, the Kinsale Shark Advertising Festival and the Art Directors Club of Europe. In Britain, he directed the short films ‘Julius Caesar: Shakespeare Lives’ (2016), for the British Council, and ‘You Are Awake’ (2017), for Channel 4, which earned him a nomination for the Young Director Award. ‘The Wailing’ (2024), his first feature film, was selected in 2022 for Ibermedia-Coproduction Projects and had its world premiere in the Official Section of the San Sebastian Festival, where it won the award for best director.
