The second feature film by Maura Delpero (Maternal) takes place in 1944, in a mountain village in northern Italy, which gives the film its title. Vermiglio, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, is constructed as a period drama that presents a portrait of a family on the verge of the end of the Second World War. The idyllic life of the local village teacher and his large family is disrupted when a deserting soldier arrives in the village in search of a hiding place. This scenario is the backdrop against which Delpero develops a web of relationships, reflecting through them on themes such as motherhood, patriarchy and the passing of time. All through a delicate and suggestive mise-en-scène that draws on the poetry of the landscape and connects with a whole tradition of Italian cinema, from Ermanno Olmi to Alice Rohrwacher.
Maura Delpero

Born in 1975 in Bolzano, Italy, she trained in playwriting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after studying literature at Bologna University and Paris IV La Sorbonne. Her first documentary ‘Signori Professori’, won the Avanti! Award and the UCCA Award at the 26th Turin Film Festival. In 2011, she was selected for the Locarno Film Summer School. The documentary ‘Nadea e Sveta’ (2012) won the Special Jury Mention at the Solinas – Documentary for Cinema Awards. For four years, she taught cinema in a home for single mothers in Buenos Aires, an experience that inspired her first film, ‘Maternal’ (2019). The only Italian film in competition at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival in 2020, ‘Maternal’ won the Special Jury Prize. ‘Vermiglio’ (2024) won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival.
